FUNKTION LIVE 2008 is very proud to present Junes featuring guests: Hayley Gaftarnick, Death Quant, Bad animals, Kid id, The G’s & Esteban to our funky haven for some down right dirty shenanigans at our very own spiritual home Upstairs at the Library here in Leeds this month, so make sure you get your freak on as you strut on down!
That’s right people once again we are firmly back in heart of Leeds, as we see FUNKTION LIVE 2008, take over one of Leeds’ premier live music venues The Library for some real serious, unadulterated and eclectic Sunday evening funk firmly at the epicentre Leeds live music scene. So that means only one thing, it’s time we raised our game for the true live music connoisseurs of you that are out there and who are actively looking for the next best alternative thing to wind your weekend up with.
Something tells me, I think you might find we can provide that special party to end your weekend on a high, so the next best thing that’s right is FUNKTION LIVE! Here in this cavernous and rather rustic auditorium we aim to deliver a night of pure delight for lovers of all things soulful, jazzy and funkilicious.
For FUNKTION LIVE is a springboard event for all new, up and coming, talented, funk/soul and jazz orientated bands/acts with a real emphasis on the fusion and hybrids of these genres and originality of material. Our quality control levels are high and the output is incredible to be a party to, so we suggest you dust down your most colourful vintage wear polish off those shoes, because your feet let me tell you will be moving that quickly that you won’t have time to sit down and relax on your laurels believe me!
For all our artists that we look forward to featuring this month love nothing more than to rock a venue to it’s very foundations with some of the most sickest bass beats to cross the Atlantic in decades and some of the most devastatingly original rhythms and melodies to ever grace a Leeds stage. Leeds the home of independent labels, bars and clubs and stores will once again witness the growth of yet another little gem in the form of FUNKTION LIVE as our star looks set to climb the very ranks, on the Leeds live music scene this year as we look towards creating our own renaissance

So without further do funksters, I give you June’s Library line-up; This month sees the continual growth of our own hidden gem of an event, with another sparkling diamond in the form of a young lady that goes by the name of Ms Hayley Gafternick. This stunning young lady is debuting with FUNKTION LIVE as a solo acoustic funk, soul act. Ms Gafternick is an intricate powerhouse and delicate soulful diva which has shone here in Leeds and nationwide for a few years now an she is steadily growing a very popular fan base amongst the loyal Leeds music scene crowd, so we cannot wait to host her live and proud this month.

Next up and hailing from our very own city Leeds is Craig Scott on Guitar, Cat Daniels on the funky Bass, Joost Hendrickx on those rhythm kings the Drums and the delightful Louise Marsland on Tenor and Baritone Sax and together they make up the nu-jazz collective The Bad Animals. Well seasoned music specialists these stars make their FUNKTION LIVE debut and we cannot wait for the audible feast they are sure as funk going serve up for all those who attend on Sunday 29th June! Its going get fierce ya’all!

Following in the stream of things are The Bad Animals cohorts and friends Death Quant with their very delectable palate of all things eclectic and somewhat experimental funky vibe. Boy is this a real treat for the slightly left field crowd.

Steadily moving up the line-up we have an extra special appearance from one of Leeds’ finest and highly skilled Kid iD, began life in the creative mind of Ralph Pelleymounter many moons ago. Since 2006 the current line-up of drums, bass, guitar, trumpet, trombone, djembe, percussion, violin, cello and a bucket load of vocals have been instigating rhythmic bodily writhing in venues across the UK. Winners of the reputable Bright Young Things competition in Easter 2006, Kid iD quickly established themselves on the Leeds circuit, headlining the Cockpit at the start of 2007.

Kid iD's sound soon began working its way around the country, selling out shows from Camden to Glasgow and even supporting classical/drum'n'bass experiment The London Breakbeat Orchestra at the legendary Clapham Grand. Last summer saw Kid iD play alongside the likes of Pendulum and Coldcut at Bloom Festival and this year the band will be playing with DJ Food, Mark Ronson, The Gallows, The Cribs and Turin Brakes at various festivals and gigs across the UK.

With BBC radio play, live sessions on Kerrang, an exciting debut album and national magazine coverage Kid iD have gone from strength to strength, rapidly gaining a reputation for their original and upbeat performances, music from folk to funk and ska to drum'n'bass. We think it’s time to enjoy!

After which we have Leeds’ newest and indeed coolest concept sleazy beats, funk outfit The G’s, better known as The Grown Up Scandals, who previously funked Carpe Diem to it’s very foundations would you believe with their highly original infectious and charismatic uplifting vibes and soulful tones. They just make you wanna get your groove on people! They are hot to trot and boy will they get your body jacking to the beats as you try to resist, the music will surely sweep you up off your feet and carry you away to lands unknown, so we would truly advise you prepare yourself well for the ensuing journey ahead folks, cos it’s gonna get a little hot and sweaty like never before!

Then it’s going to get somewhat more raucous as we turn the volume up on the pa and we hit the main headlining act who have journeyed al the way from the midlands especially to be with us for tonight’s mother funkin affair. So Leeds it’s time to buckle up and prepare yourself for an almighty and thunderous explosion of highly sensitive material as just after 11pm on 12th October 2002, deadly acts of terrorism occurred in the backpacking district of Kuta on the island of Bali, Indonesia. Around late night camp fires, stories were told and thoughts exchanged about the world and its ways. Four young musicians on a life changing voyage to South East Asia felt like their eyes were being fully opened to the world in which they lived. Amongst beautifully chaotic surroundings they found what they believed in and came to a decision…

Esteban call it Desert Funk. It's what happens when you want to dance! To get up and get down to dirty funk beats, to be taken on a journey through lyrical landscapes that transport you to the hills of Santiago and the beaches of South East Asia. Enchanted by gloriously addictive pop hooks your senses are reminded of Chili's, Jamiroquai, Bee Gees, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Bob Marley and The Police.

With touring firmly in their blood, Esteban have appeared alongside Gomez, Chumbawamba and the Young Knives. On the road is where you'll be captivated by vocalist Stephen's enigmatic performances and crazy dance moves.

“The band is like an extended family and there is no better feeling than creating and performing with your best friends.” Says bassist Ricky whose uncle used to play sax in Charlie Watts' (of The Rolling Stones) jazz band. Ricky grew up hanging out with musicians. “To Ricky: Merry Christmas from B.B. King” reads the postcard. Guitarist Liam is a Grade 8 classical guitarist who travelled to Cuba in order to play with Buena Vista Social Club guitarist Eliades Ochoa. Just listen to Liam's wonderful finger picking style of playing to understand that Esteban are truly original. Drummer Muel adds: “One ethos surrounding Esteban is innovation and immagination, lyrically the best messages are the simplest, that way they reach everyone positively".

Esteban's debut EP is scheduled for release this year on The Animal Farm, the label run by the producers of current indie darlings One Night Only, Rosalita and Ejectorseat.

These lads are big, bold, determined and can only be best described as the Kaiser Chiefs of the funk world as they bring there trademark high energy 21st century funk rock vibe to Leeds for the very first time, so miss this event at your peril because this is a real coup for FUNKTION LIVE so spread the word because we predict a riot come Sunday 29th June at The Library!

Leeds this is a massive treat and the first of many so please come down and show your full support as we continue down the path of our funk revolution, it’s set to be one hell of a ride!

FUNKTION LIVE also is in fine company this evening also as we bare witness to the legendary DJ Stylish take to the Library’s decks to bring us all things, chunky, funky, and down right naughty in between the many live band sets, so do not miss this extravaganza of pure pleasure seeking boys and girls! Remember if you have a shout out or request please do not hesitate to see DJ Stylish as he funks it up in the mix!

The eighth part of FUNKTION LIVE promises to be another special event to remember, so please get the word around and lets throw a party to be proud of!
